It seems daunting to many, but learning multiplication facts doesn’t have to be a chore. Mastering the basics and using the right strategies can make success a reality. With the right tools, memorizing facts can become an enjoyable and successful experience.

Basic Strategies for Memorizing

One of the best ways to help students memorize multiplication facts is through deliberate practice and memorization. Deliberate practice means focusing on one fact until it is memorized, and then using that fact to help with related facts. By breaking something difficult down into smaller pieces, it can become manageable and even enjoyable.

It’s helpful to generate a short list of facts to focus on each day. Once the facts that are explored become second nature, the student can easily move on to the next challenge. Varying the practice from time to time improves the accuracy and helps it to stick more easily. For instance, instead of just practicing the 6 times table, spell out the answers (six, twelve, eighteen, etc.) or use other methods to help things stick in the brain.

Flash cards are another helpful tool. Rather than using generic flash cards, we can customize them to focus on whatever our student may have trouble memorizing. In this way, it’s easy to target particular topics and topics. We can also make them fun with the use of colors, images, and different fonts.

Using Visuals

Using visuals to help build understanding can greatly aid in memorizing multiplication facts. Visuals give students a better grasp of the facts and make them easier to remember. It’s a good idea to keep multiplication charts or grids nearby, as these visual representations can be helpful when memorizing or having difficulty recalling a particular fact.

For instance, the multiplication chart in the image allows us to easily identify which facts are related and their respective relations. This makes learning multiple facts and using related facts easier. We can also look up mutually related facts quickly. For example, if we’re having trouble recalling the 6 times table, we can simply look up what 6 multiplied by 8 is. This type of visual representation helps make learning multiplication a much easier process.

We can also create our own visuals that coincide with the facts we are attempting to learn. For instance, if we are learning 5 times tables, we can draw a simple 5 dot pattern that helps students make the connection. Simple images and visuals greatly improve the understanding and memorization of multiplication facts.

Using Mnemonics

Mnemonics have a long-standing usage in educational settings, especially when it comes to memorizing facts. Mnemonics are memory aids that use existing knowledge and help store information into our long-term memory. For instance, the mnemonic “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas” is a popular mnemonic for memorizing the order of the planets in our solar system.

Using this approach to multiplication memorization is very helpful as well. For instance, creating a phrase such as “Six Times Eight, Bakers Great Cake for Eight” can help to remember the fact that 6 times 8 equals 48. The more creative and personal the mnemonic is, the easier it will be to remember. Writing words on the back of your hand or using songs to help reinforce the facts can also help to ensure their memorization.

Memorizing multiplication facts doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be made much easier by using multiple strategies in tandem. Whether it’s through deliberate practice, visual aids, or mnemonic devices, making a plan and focusing on a few facts each day can make the process of memorizing multiplication facts much smoother. With the right tools and plan, the focus can stay on understanding and successes can come with time.
