Ingredients:
- 1 lb elbow macaroni
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 2 cups grated cheddar cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Cook the elbow macaroni according to the package instructions and set aside.
To make the cheese sauce, melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until smooth. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the mixture turns light brown. Slowly add the milk to the pan, whisking constantly. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens, about 7-8 minutes. Add the salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cheddar cheese, and Parmesan cheese to the pan. Stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and mix until the pasta is evenly coated. Transfer the mac and cheese to a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the panko bread crumbs on top of the mac and cheese.
Bake for 30 minutes or until the bread crumbs are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve hot and enjoy!
This mac and cheese recipe is perfect for indulging in on a cozy night in or sharing with friends and family at a potluck. The creamy cheese sauce is perfectly seasoned with a hint of cayenne pepper for a bit of kick. The breadcrumb topping adds just the right amount of crunch to every bite.
