Are you struggling to keep up in math? Or do you simply want to strengthen your multiplication skills? You’re in the right place. The process of mastering multiplication can feel overwhelming, but the good news is, it doesn’t have to. Most math topics can be cracked with a bit of practice and a lot of repetition.
Multiplication charts
If you’re just beginning your journey with multiplication, starting out with a multiplication chart can be a great way to get the hang of it. A multiplication chart visually organizes the process, and guides you on the path to mastery. Before diving in, it can be helpful to understand the basics. As you work with a multiplication chart, you’ll notice that you’re really just dealing with groups. You start with one number, then ‘multiply’ by another to come up with a result.
For example, if you’ve got two items, they form a group of two (2×1). When you add another, you have another group of two (2×2). From there, just keep adding more items to create a sequence, that you can later track with your multiplication chart. As you add more items, the number of groups will increase. You’ll eventually get to a point where you can start to connect the dots between all the numbers, and ultimately, ace your multiplication drills.
It can take some practice before you become a multiplication chart pro. And it’s okay to use a calculator in the meantime. You are the master of your own progress, and the chart is there simply to give you the visibility you need to move ahead. Spend some time with a multiplication chart, and learn the logic behind it. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can make progress.
Multiplication strategies
Now that you understand the basics of multiplication, you can dive a little deeper and come up with some strategies to make the process easier. In other words, it’s time to look for shortcuts that eventually become second nature. This is especially helpful when you need to do a lot of multiplication calculations in a very short amount of time. First, remember that mental math is key, and if you need to use a calculator, focus on using mental math as much as possible.
Second, take a look at the multiplicand and multiplier. For example, if you’re multiplying 4×6, keep in mind that 4×5 = 20, and 4 x 1 = 4. You can use this to your advantage to make the calculation easier. So in the example of 4×6: 4×5 is 20 and 4×1 is 4. Add them together and you get 24.
Finally, memorize as much as possible. Squares, for example, are a great place to start. A lot of multiplication problems involve square numbers, which make it easy to calculate results. As you keep going, you’ll start to recognize which information is easy to remember, and which information can be quickly retrieved from a chart. Soon, you’ll be breezing through multiplication exercises with ease.
Building confidence in math
The ultimate goal of mastering multiplication (and math in general) is to build your confidence with numbers. Confidence is key in both our academic and personal lives. The problem with math is that it’s easy to fall into negative patterns if you make a mistake. If you’re not sure how to approach a certain multiplication problem, you can easily get discouraged. That’s why it’s so important to take a break every now and then and remind yourself that it’s ok not to get things right the first time.
It’s also worth noting that success in math is an ongoing process. And it often takes time to fully realize your potential. Along the way, it’s valuable to recognize and celebrate the small wins. Feeling proud of your progress – no matter how minor – can be a huge confidence booster, and it can have a big impact on your overall attitude and mindset.
With every mistake made and every new concept learned, you can gradually build up your confidence in math, and in life. You are the author of your own story, and the power is in your hands. Give yourself space to make mistakes, and strive to celebrate your growth and progress.
