  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add flour and whisk constantly for 1 minute to create a roux.
  4. Gradually add the milk and cream, whisking constantly until the mixture is smooth and thickened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  6. Add the grated cheese and stir until melted and smooth.
  7. Stir the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until well coated.
  8. Transfer the macaroni and cheese to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
