Ingredients

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 sleeve Ritz crackers, crushed
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F
  2. Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions and drain.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat. Add in 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour, whisking constantly, until fully combined. Cook for 1 minute while constantly stirring.
  4. Slowly pour in 2 cups of milk while continuing to whisk. Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring for 2-3 minutes until it starts to thicken.
  5. Add in the sour cream, 4 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon onion powder. Stir everything together until melted and fully combined.
  6. Add in the cooked macaroni and stir until fully coated with the cheese sauce. Season with salt and pepper to your liking and transfer everything to a baking dish.
  7. In a separate bowl, mix together the crushed Ritz crackers with 3 tablespoons of melted butter. Spread the mixture over the mac and cheese in the baking dish.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove the dish from the oven and give it a few minutes to cool before serving.
